Infighting within the ZANU-PF youth wing has escalated, with youth secretary-general Tinoda Machakel asking his deputy John Paraza to immediately withdraw a notice he issued that allegedly brought the recent national The reorganization of the Executive Committee is invalid.
On December 9, 2024, Machakel announced the reorganization of the African National Union-Patriotic Front Youth League, a move that was resisted by Palaza. Palaza argued the reshuffle was unconstitutional and directed affected officials to stay on.
In his response, Palaza referred to the specific provisions in the party constitution and claimed: “Please familiarize yourself with the provisions of Article 26 (340) (1) and (2), which stipulate the functions and responsibilities of the Deputy Secretary-General of the Youth Department “. He emphasized that as the deputy secretary of youth affairs, Machakel had no right to interfere with the functions of the secretary of youth affairs, and said that there was no constitutional basis for Machakel to make such a move.
Palaza further questioned Machakel’s conduct, saying: “In your letter, you vaguely refer to the composition of the National Executive Committee of the Youth League without specifying the terms on which you base your claims.” He pointed out that the reshuffle did not violate the constitution and no officials were removed from office.
Macchakel defended the reshuffle in his letter, saying: “The adjustment of the departmental leadership of the National Executive Committee of the Communist Youth League is purely to strengthen the fulfillment of the constitutional obligations of the Communist Youth League and the implementation of the National People’s Congress meeting resolution. “
He also made it clear that the changes were in line with the principal’s guidance, claiming: “As Youth League Secretary, I have communicated these adjustments because I have received appropriate guidance from the principal in accordance with Article 10, Section 88 (1), (2)& (13) and Article 26(339)(1)&(4).”
Finally, Machakel ordered Palaza to immediately withdraw his notice and warned that failure to do so would result in further disciplinary action. “Your widely circulated and published letter questioning the position conveyed is non-compliant and must be withdrawn immediately or appropriate action will be taken,” he said.
Rising tensions within the Youth League highlight the deepening divisions within the ZANU-PF, which has major implications for the party’s future cohesion.
