Macau’s tourist arrivals grow steadily in July

The number of tourists in July increased by 9.5% compared with the same period in 2023, but this figure did not achieve a full post-epidemic recovery and was only 85.6% of the 3.53 million tourists reported in July 2019.

The largest source of tourists is still domestic tourists. In July, only 173,000 tourists came from abroad, an increase of about 33% year-on-year, but only 75.5% of the corresponding total before the epidemic.

Southeast Asian countries saw a significant increase in the number of tourists in July, with the number of tourists from the Philippines reaching nearly 43,000, a year-on-year increase of 38%. Meanwhile, the Malaysian market grew by 31.4% (8,965 people), while Singapore grew by 13.3% (5,669 people). However, the number of tourists from Indonesia and Thailand fell by 7.4% (13,570 people) and 14% (8,294 people) respectively.

The other two major source countries of tourists, South Korea and Japan, also saw year-on-year growth of approximately 66% (32,825 visitors) and 58% (8,778 visitors), respectively.

In terms of the domestic tourist market, all markets except Hong Kong saw strong growth last month. Tourists from mainland China increased by about 14% year-on-year to 2.18 million, equivalent to 85% of the total before the epidemic.

Likewise, there was an increase in the number of Taiwanese tourists, with arrivals rising by almost 30% to a total of 75,783, equivalent to nearly 93% of the number in July 2019.

However, compared with July 2023, the number in Hong Kong fell by nearly 11%, to a total of about 589,000.

Overall, the number of visitors to Australia from January to July this year reached 19.74 million, an increase of 37% over the same period last year, but still lower than the 23.81 million in the first seven months of 2019, a recovery of about 83%.
