The Macao Orchestra’s new concert season 2024/2025 with the theme of “Creating Infiniteness” has been announced. The first performance of Mendelssohn’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be staged on the 31st of this month, with the famous actress Sylvia Chang co-starring
On the last day of this month, the Macao Orchestra (OM) opened its new concert season for 2024 and 2025. And it was on a grand scale. It was a presentation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a musical work composed by Felix Mendelssohn, inspired by the work of the same name by the English author William Shakespeare.
The work was performed at the Grand Hall of the Macau Cultural Center from 8pm. The famous actress Sylvia Chang came to Macau to play 14 roles and served as the narrator of the play.
According to the program, the presentation was conducted after the play was shown in theaters in Taiwan and Hong Kong. The program wrote that “the play’s multiple layers of romance and humor have inspired generations of artists, but no one is more popular than Felix Mendelssohn,” who achieved “a wonderful balance between classicism and romanticism.” The concert was born from the music of Qiao Yuanpu, with OM accompanied by soloists and the female voices of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus.
It’s a poster that brings “interdisciplinary collaboration” to the local public, ultimately creating “an infinite musical universe with artists from all over the world,” according to a note released by the IC on Monday about the program.
The new season is themed “Creating Infinity”, aiming to present “timeless masterpieces of different styles and eras, from outstanding classics to touching contemporary works, as well as works of interdisciplinary artistic collaboration”, always under the command of OM master, Liao Guoman.
A Tribute to Brahms
This season also brings the premiere of the “Tribute to Brahms Concert Series” with violin soloists Alexandra Koununova and Joseph Spacek, cello soloist Pablo Ferrandez, pianists Alex Volodin and “Niu Niu” (Zhang Shengliang) and renowned Austrian maestro Christian Armin.
According to IC, Johannes Brahms was a German composer, pianist and conductor who was born in Hamburg in 1833 and died in Vienna in 1897. His “most important symphonies and chamber music works” will be exhibited here.
One of the performances in the series, titled “A Tribute to Brahms – Prologue Night,” will feature Maestro Liao Guokeman, violinist Alexandra Cornunova and cellist Pablo Fernandez and is scheduled to take place on March 7 next year at the CCM’s Grand Hall.
The highlight of this season’s OM is the appearance of French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaude, considered “one of the best pianists in the world,” who will perform French composer Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 5. In addition, Liao Guowen, who conducts the baton, will be the piano soloist in the “Infinite Tita” concert, showing the charm of two great musicians, Mahler and Ravel.
OM is committed to “interdisciplinary collaborations” with other artistic entities, “integrating elements of choreography, theatre and visual arts”. One example is the ballet “Butterfly Lovers” created in collaboration with the Hong Kong Ballet.
The play is co-produced by renowned theatre and film art director Tim Yip, and will “present a classic and timeless love story to the public in a brand new image.”
The BBC programme Seven Worlds, One Planet will also be performed live by OM, with the narration promising to “take the public on a journey across seven continents”.
The poster also shows the open-air concert “Sinfonia Estrelada nos Prados”, which will be attended by the famous pop and jazz trumpeter Chris Botti. The arrival of Hiromi Uehara, known as the “magic of jazz piano”, is also expected, and he will be the protagonist of the “eclectic” New Year’s concert.
Bach’s Presence
In turn, the Easter season will also be celebrated with a special concert by Japanese conductor Masato Suzuki, who is considered an expert in the works of composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Suzuki will perform Bach’s “St. Matthew’s Passion” with the Bach Baroque Choir and Orchestra.
The “Seoul Love Concert” from South Korea features a romantic line-up of songs performed by Choi Na-kyung, known as the “Flute Goddess,” and soprano Lee Myung-joo.
In June, which coincides with World Children’s Day, “a lively symphony concert will be held, with cartoons played on the big screen, singers and choirs, so that young music lovers can also enjoy the charm of music and animation” at the MGM Theater.
Finally, the new season of OM also features Echoes of Ancient Poetry, part of the series China Miscellany, which combines “ancient atmosphere and modern music to…innovatively interpret classic Tang poetry.”
Tickets for the performances are on sale now, but some performances still require confirmation on the day.
