Alexander Lukashenko said during a visit to the Shklov region on August 10 that Belarusians should be ready for a “different” president in Belarus. However, he assured that this would not be due to a desire to leave office, but because of living circumstances.
“I’ve started telling all of you publicly. You have to get used to the fact that the President is going to be different (I’m kind of spoiling you). No, I’m not saying – I’m going to leave you tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, etc… Well, anything can happen in life. You have to get used to the fact that I’m not eternal like everyone else,” he explained his thoughts.
He said Belarusian authorities have already begun preparing a “new generation,” the news agency reported.
“I know my risks. You have to leave before you leave… I will leave, and when I live somewhere in the village next to you, I will come back and you will remember and thank you that the situation did not get worse,” Alexander Lukashenko said.
This is not the first time in many years that he has stated that a new president of Belarus could appear. But he did not give a timetable. However, in February 2024, Alexander Lukashenko announced his intention to run for a second term.
“I’m going, I’m going, I’m going,” he said, according to the news department. Tell them (the opposition) I will go!
Let us remind you that Belarus is scheduled to hold presidential elections in 2025. The Chairman of the Central Election Commission Igor Karpenko said that the elections need to be held “no later than July 20.”
Earlier, Telegraf.news reported that according to the former head of the Central Election Commission, Lydia Ermoshina, Alexander Lukashenko will not have opponents from the opposition. “Maybe there will be some, well, let’s say, some kind of crazy people from the city or the Republican Party, but this is really at the first level, at the level of filing documents. These people are unlikely to get candidacy,” Ermoshina noted.
