Santo Domingo. President Luis Abinader presented this Monday a proposal to reform the Dominican Constitution based on four axes: unification of municipal, congressional and presidential elections, reduction of the number of deputies, strengthening of the independence of the public ministries and avoidance of future constitutional reforms of the rules for re-election of the president through a stone clause.
After presenting the proposals, the president took some time to clarify. The first one read verbatim: “All transitional provisions currently contained in the constitution will remain unchanged and continue to apply.”
The current constitution contains 20 transitional provisions, among which the one that specifically prohibits the nomination of former President Danilo Medina as President of the Republic stands out.

The president said a transitional provision would also be made requiring that all laws necessary for this constitutional reform or any other previous constitutional reform be prepared, submitted and approved during the 2024-2028 government.
