Former Minister of People’s Empowerment and Elderly Affairs Cynthia Forde yesterday listed a series of instances of elder abuse in Barbados and expressed hope that legislation would be introduced soon to put some elder abusers behind bars.
The senior politician said she is still receiving reports of elder abuse to date.Resolution: National Policy on Ageing 2023-2028.
In a passionate and emotional speech, Ford said government agencies receive reports every day of cruel treatment of the elderly and that seniors are beaten, starved and neglected.
“My colleague Dr. Wiltshire and I work with the Department of Aged Care, and of course we work with others in agencies like Thousands of Families, and we interact with each other to make sure reporting and so on is going on. Some people call and ask – (the elderly) have been abandoned for a whole week, with nothing to eat…
She charged: “Our elderly people – most of them, I should say – are not treated very well at all, especially with friends and family, the two Fs; and this has to be curbed.” (MB)
