Algorithms are everywhere. Search engines, platforms, networks, apps, channels, games, and things we don’t even know what they are are all competing for our attention and influencing our tastes. The brain must run faster and faster to pay attention to infinite scrolling and see dynamic, influential, and simple content. This summer, let’s slow down, read the books we want, do some literary stretches, and then move on from the algorithms. There are several novels hidden in every July and August article that can be read slowly. Today at 10 o’clock:

Facebook is for old people, X (Twitter) has a growing message of hate, racism, xenophobia and fake news, and its masters and overlords chat with Donald Trump for an hour without filter, letting all the lies in the world slide. The Instagram algorithm tortures me with Shein Curve ads. That’s why I wanted to try TikTok, which the whole world is watching. I didn’t want to feel like a mammoth, opening an account on a constantly moving network. I felt the effects immediately, and then I was dancing all over the house, looking in the mirror, gesticulating and choreographing. You can’t sit still on TikTok.

I have to make videos with music, and they are very, very short. Here, the world moves in seconds. But now, I decide to watch. They are already short, but if I want, I can speed them up to microseconds. I don’t give a range, this is no longer infinite scroll, I don’t even need to touch the phone screen, the video loops at the speed of light, it’s like the biggest flood I can imagine, I don’t know who or as the levees say. I see people choreographing in restaurants, hallways, rooms, mostly to Latin rhythms. A lot of hip thrusts. They go viral immediately. They don’t all danceThere are also videos of art, videos of people painting, videos of the Prado Museum, videos of CosmoCaixa, using the Internet to promote culture. They told me that on TikTok you can spread any topic, I don’t have to be biased, and you can alleviate the loneliness of many people.

But the joy soon wore off, and I found that the most viral things were the most flashy, the most ridiculous or the most morbid. Fake news spread like wildfire, and far-right leaders were kings, blessed with virality. Before Mire was elected president of Argentina, European teenagers were familiar with him and his shouting. The far right has won the war for the network’s attention.

This rain of bad news makes me want to pay attention to TikTok. I don’t have time to watch more videos. In fact, I have been telling myself for several days: tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow I will watch more. And I don’t.
