The European Parliament’s LIBE committee, which focuses on civil liberties, justice and home affairs, will be chaired by the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP), although two different parliamentary sources told Euractiv that it is currently in talks with the far-right European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR).
The issue is still being discussed at the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament.
According to two sources, the liberal Ennahda party must make a “free choice” between the Security and Defense Subcommittee (SEDE) and LIBE.
Sources told Euractiv that Renew chose SEDE, while LIBE was left to ECR.
Other pro-EU forces have also intervened, suggesting swapping the LIBE committee with the Agriculture Committee (AGRI), Euractiv has learned.
A source close to the negotiations said: “The LIBE committee will come under the EPP, while the ECR will get AGRI,” although he made it clear that this change has not yet been made officially.
“We need to keep the Law and Justice party away from LIBE (…) They should not have any influence on this committee,” the source added.
The ECR called for the LIBE commission at a meeting earlier this week, but pro-EU progressive forces vowed to do “everything” to prevent the far right from getting it.
