Indonesia’s volcanology agency said the Levotobi-Laki-Laki volcano, located on the tourist island of Flores, first erupted at around 11:00 a.m. local time (03:00 GMT) and then again at around 2:40 p.m., releasing thick black smoke.
“Residents and tourists are prohibited from approaching within three kilometers of the eruption center,” the agency announced.
The volcano has erupted several times in January, prompting authorities to raise the alert level to the highest and evacuate about 2,000 residents.
Currently, the alert level is just below the highest level.
Indonesia is a vast archipelago located on the Pacific Ring of Fire that experiences intense volcanic and seismic activity.
Last December, an eruption of Mount Marapi in western Sumatra, one of the country’s most active volcanoes, killed at least 24 climbers, mostly students.
In May, heavy rains washed volcanic material into populated areas, destroying homes and killing more than 60 people.
