Joseph Muscat has reserved his views on Labour’s dismal performance in the European elections, insisting he wants to wait until the results of the local elections are in before commenting.

Muscat said he was satisfied with Prime Minister Robert Abela’s performance in government and insisted that the people would be the judge of that when they elect a new government.

“I think a lot of the analysis that has been done so far is superficial… There is already a difference between the European election results and yesterday’s local election results and I think it is premature to analyse the situation before having all the results,” Muscat said as he walked out of the Valletta courthouse after the second sitting of Vitals’ corruption case.

The former prime minister has declined to comment on ongoing court proceedings in which he is charged with corruption, money laundering and participation in a criminal organization over hospital contracts his government signed with unnamed investors.

Muscat acknowledged comments by former Labor leader Alfred Sant that the shenanigans he witnessed outside the court during Muscat’s first trial had damaged the Labor Party. “My presence may have a positive or negative effect, but it remains to be seen what the final outcome will be,” he responded.

Asked about divisions within the Labour Party, Muscat insisted the party knew how to unite.
