The incident occurred shortly before noon. “We are currently conducting an intervention on Lazarska Street in Prague 1, where a piece of cornice may have fallen from the roof. A man is being resuscitated on site, unfortunately without success.” The police said on the X social network.

The man was taking shelter from the rain at the bus station, heading towards Spallena Street and Plaza Calovo. The cornice suddenly came loose from the roof of the building and flew over the shelter, as evidenced by the large hole in the roof. She then hit the man.

Police spokesman Jan Daněk said at the scene that five or six people were standing at the bus stop with the man when the tragedy occurred. But witnesses to the accident told ČTK that the man was standing there alone. On the contrary, there were a few people standing opposite, taking shelter from the heavy rain. When they saw the man had been hit by something, they ran towards him, called emergency services and provided him with first aid, including CPR. Other witnesses described hearing a loud bang.

Broken glasses and a pack of cigarettes were scattered on the ground.

Římsa fell from the house next to the bus station where the subsidiary of the Public Health Insurance Company Pojišťovna VZP (PVZP) was located. According to the real estate cadastre, PVZP is also the owner of the building. Firefighters removed another 100 kg of material from the ledge, which, according to them, was in danger of falling. “Criminal detectives are currently working on the scene, examining the crime scene, and we will find out What was the reason for the cornice to fall? Was the fall not caused by neglect of certain duties, etc. However, we already know that there was a strong storm when the ledge collapsed,” said police spokesman Jan Daněk.

“We as humans are shocked”

PVZP pro Blesk said the building was newly renovated and well maintained. “However, unfortunately, during the downpour and strong winds, a construction element collapsed in front of the building. Unfortunately, the fall resulted in death, causing a huge human tragedy. We express our sincere condolences to the victims and we are shocked by this tragedy. Of course, our company will provide full cooperation to all components of the integrated rescue system. “She said.

Due to the closure of Lazarská Street, cars and tram line 39 (terminating at Vodičkova station) could not run for about two hours during track maintenance at Wenceslas Square. The transport company said that the line will not go to Lazarka but will be diverted to Karlovona MestiPalackého náměstí and Myslíkova Street to return to your route. The Národní metro station on Lazarská Street also has no elevator.
