Apia, Samoa – August 5, 2024 – Lawyer Fuimaono Josephine Sapolu did not apply for bail for her client, Papalii Sia Figiel, due to the possibility of her changing her plea to one of the charges.
When she informed the court her client might change his plea, she did not identify which charge.
Papalli has pleaded not guilty to six charges including murder, manslaughter, grievous bodily harm, assault, possession of a dangerous weapon and actual bodily harm. A hearing is scheduled for March 2025.
The prosecution opposed the bail application and the case was adjourned to August 19 to allow the prosecution to consider the possible change in the defendant’s position.
Figill is accused of causing the death of American Samoan scholar Dr. Caroline Sinavaiana Gabbard last May.
