Apia, Samoa – July 9, 2024 – Lawyer Unasa Iuni Sapolu has filed a complaint regarding the alleged beating of his client, Samuelu (Sam) Su’a, by the police.
Unasa told history The incident allegedly took place in the holding cell of the Mulinuu court on 20 June, following Samuelu’s court appearance.
Unasa was concerned about her client’s safety, so she insisted on his release on bail.
She said: “He (Sam) has health problems and it is inhumane for him to be treated like this.”
Samuel and his wife had been detained since February 2024 until his wife was released last month under strict bail conditions.
However, Sam was denied bail and his bail hearing was rescheduled for August 5, 2024.
However, Unasa’s claim was refuted by a police inspector from the police force in court.
He said that after Samuel appeared in court that day, he was escorted to a cell to await transfer back to Tanumalala prison, but he wanted to spend time with his wife and family but was not allowed.
While in the detention center cell, Sam began “moving around the cell and banging his head against the wall,” the officer said.
The officer also said if there were any injuries on the accused, they were self-inflicted.
However, Unasa said the incident did occur and she will use it to further push for her client’s release at a bail hearing next month.
Samuel and his wife face multiple charges, including providing misleading information to police, in connection with an unresolved hit-and-run in April 2021 in Vaitele.
