Latvian citizens began to buy guns more and more frequently, and there is another new trend – women need a license to own weapons more often than before. This is allegedly caused by the unstable world security situation and social situation. The statistics were corrected by amendments to the Law on the Circulation of Weapons, which the parliament adopted two years ago. They started two opposite processes: disarmament and armaments.
Non-Latvian citizens, Russian and Belarusian citizens with permanent residence permits, and citizens of non-NATO and EU member states will not have the right to own and carry firearms in Latvia from 2023. They will also no longer be able to obtain a license to own and carry sporting or hunting weapons.
How about Latvian weapons?
The state police reported that more than a thousand licenses to own weapons were revoked last year. 1,014 non-Latvian citizens, 189 Russian citizens and 6 citizens of the Republic of Belarus were deprived of the right to own weapons.
“Everyone has handed in their guns. Currently, there are no guns in the hands of non-citizens of the Republic of Latvia, as well as citizens of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus,” the state police told the “Delfi” portal.
Number of guns and owners
The Law on the Circulation of Weapons provides that a natural person has the right to purchase or possess no more than 10 firearms and high-energy pneumatic weapons, excluding interchangeable major parts of firearms.
