Data released by the European Statistical Office on August 20 showed that the number of asylum seekers in Latvia increased significantly in May compared to April.

Latvian national broadcaster writes that although the absolute number of applications is small by European standards, reaching only 90, data on first asylum applications showed a 50% increase that month, the largest percentage increase in the entire European Union.

There were 60 applications in March and April and only 20 in February, which, despite an increase, is still far below the 335 applications registered in October 2023.

In May 2024, there were only 25 first-time asylum applications in Lithuania, compared to 125 in Estonia.

In the EU, the number of first-time asylum seekers per 100,000 inhabitants is 17.1. Compared to the population of each EU country (as of 1 January 2024), Ireland has the highest number of first-time applicants (37.4), followed by Greece (33.2), Spain (31.7) and Cyprus (29.9). By this standard, Latvia’s figures are relatively low, with less than 5 applicants per 100,000 inhabitants.
