Following the successful completion of a South American tourism sales mission last summer led by Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett and Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) officials, Latin America’s largest airline, LATAM, will resume direct flights between Lima, Peru and Montego Bay, St. James, Jamaica on December 1 this year.
Welcoming the new LATAM route, Bartlett said: “We are excited to see LATAM Airlines launch this new route, which reaffirms our commitment to improving connectivity and tourism growth in this critical region. This move marks a pivotal moment for Jamaica as we expand our presence in the Latin American market, which will increase visitor numbers and generate revenue for the Jamaican economy.”
The flights will operate three times a week using Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft with a capacity of 144 and 174 passengers respectively. The flights connect Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay to Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima, Peru, and the flight schedule will allow passengers to easily connect to Peru’s domestic route network as well as several South American countries including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.
Last summer, Bartlett, senior adviser and strategist Delano Seiveright, JTB principal Donosvan White and other officials led outreach to hundreds of Latin American tourism trade partners in Argentina, Chile and Peru.
The airline had previously operated flights to Jamaica for several weeks in December 2019, January and February 2020, but these were interrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
