A landslide on a highway bridge and a village in China has killed at least eight people and left 19 missing, state media reported on Sunday. The disaster occurred early Saturday morning near Kangding in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southwestern Sichuan province, about 1,700 kilometers from Beijing.
Flash floods and landslides caused a highway bridge connecting two tunnels to collapse, trapping 11 people in four vehicles, CCTV reported on Sunday.
One person was rescued, but two others died and eight are still missing. The tragedy also affected the town of Riddi near the bridge, leaving six dead and 11 missing, according to CCTV.
Two weeks ago, heavy rains caused another highway bridge to collapse, killing at least 38 people and leaving 24 missing, state media reported on Friday. China is experiencing a summer marked by extreme weather phenomena, including heavy rains, floods and abnormal temperatures.
Shanghai in eastern China has been under a red alert for high temperatures for several days. The temperature in the city center reached 40.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the highest on record so far this year, according to local official media The Paper.
Heavy rains killed at least 30 people and left 35 missing in central China this week, according to provisional figures released Thursday, a phenomenon scientists say is being exacerbated by climate change.
