A landscaping expert shares which trees you should plant around your home to help keep costs down.
They reveal which evergreens you can plant on your property that are both beautiful and can help lower your energy bills.

Moon Valley Nursery Grant Beuter, Vice President of Training and Sales, shares landscape design trends and helpful tips for outdoor renovation enthusiasts.
Moon Valley owns and operates 19 farms and more than 40 retail stores in Arizona, California, Nevada, Florida and Texas, with more than 2,100 acres of nursery space.
“A well-placed shade tree can also help block sunlight from hitting one side of your home, which can help reduce your indoor energy bills,” Beuter said.

“With record-breaking heat across the country this past summer, we’re seeing more and more people wanting to plant shade trees in their yards,” he said.
The expert shares his top tips for helping homeowners maintain cool temperatures while lowering their cost of living.
“One of the best shade trees in most areas is the southern oak,” he said.
He called evergreens “excellent trees” that can provide plenty of shade for your yard or garden.
Because it is an evergreen, its foliage remains throughout the year.
“Not only does it provide good shade in a carport, driveway or on the side of your house, it also gives you privacy,” he adds.
He calls Indian laurel another excellent variety for many areas, especially in warmer climates, because they tolerate heat well.
“The trees are dense enough to provide privacy and provide shade from the strong afternoon sun,” he explained.
But if you’re looking for a more desert-focused wine with lower water levels, he said, you “can’t go wrong” with Chilean Mesquite.
Not only does it grow quickly, but it also forms a very beautiful umbrella-shaped crown.
“It’s important to work with a local nursery professional to find not only the trees that are suitable for your area, but also the trees that are best suited to your home state,” he advises.

Through such extensive research, experts have gained in-depth insights into the most popular trees and shrubs for 2024.
“One of the biggest changes we keep seeing in landscape design is the use of sharper and cleaner materials to create this extremely clean look,” Beuter said.
“We’re seeing more people opting for a more modern patio style, with many using Hollywood hedges to provide dense, lush greenery to their space.”
Hedges can be used at a variety of heights, from “totally private” to just knee-high.
Fruit trees continue to be in high demand, which Beuter called “tremendous.”
He added: “People love having fruit on display in their homes and being able to pick it straight from their backyard and enjoy it fresh.”
Experts say there is also a growing emphasis on using interior design elements to create more attractive patios and entryways.
“Combining flowering plants, tropical greens, topiary, and even cacti with your favorite pottery can completely change the look of one’s home,” he explains.
When it comes to caring for trees, Beuter said, “Preventative care is the best care.”
“Fertilize your trees and shrubs regularly. This way, your plants will stay strong and healthy, allowing them to better resist disease or pests,” he advises.
