After spending 312 days in hospital, Dave Squire is back home in the Lake District with his wife and two daughters, but he still has a long way to go before he fully recovers from his battle with flesh-eating bacteria.
“January was the worst month of my life,” Squire said.
“It was horrible. I couldn’t eat, couldn’t drink, couldn’t talk, so I just tried to write everything down on a board and I was in such bad shape, just skin and bones… I was so depressed.”
Squire shared his difficult story with Castanet, saying there were days when he thought he would never be able to go outside again or feel the sun on his face.
He described his time in hospital as the longest year of his life, filled with darkness, and relied on his love for his family to keep him going.
“I fight for the love of my family and my daughters, who give me the strength to keep going.”
After a successful liver transplant, Squire still needs a kidney. But in the meantime, his family is glad to have him home, and they plan to celebrate the Christmas he missed later this July.
“When he gets to eat his favorite foods again, put up the Christmas tree, and see the twinkle in his eye because he’s Santa Claus. It’s kind of like watching a kid bounce back through something,” said his wife, Nicole.
“It’s been great to see him look at it all in a new light.”
With a family to support and no income for the foreseeable future, and medical bills mounting, the Squair family is turning to the community for help GoFundMe page.
“The supplies he needs cost up to $180 per box, and depending on his needs, we can go through a box in three days,” Nicole said.
“The medication and other issues added up, and I couldn’t work… We wouldn’t be in this situation if it wasn’t for the kindness of strangers, family, friends and our village. The village saved us, we just need more help.”
The Squire family are very grateful for the help they have received from the hospital and are urging people to consider becoming an organ donor.
