Matt Kuchar apologized on Monday to all the spectators who had to return to Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, to watch him play the final hole alone at the Wyndham Championship.
Kuchar was out when he reached the final par-4 18th at Sedgefield against the backdrop of fading daylight on Sunday, hit his drive far left, got into trouble, then tagged his ball and decided to finish in the morning.
Kuchar got visual relief Monday on the scoreboard near the green, which allowed him to hit his shot on the adjacent fairway, so it took him six minutes to finish his round with par.
The 46-year-old American finished in a 10-way tie for 12th place and earned $134,695. A bogey would have dropped his payout to just over $77,000.
“Nobody wants to be the guy that showed up today, one hole in one, couldn’t even make a hole in one, couldn’t make half a hole in one,” Kuchar said Monday.
“So I apologize to the tournament and to everyone who had to come. I know it’s bad, I know the consequences are bad. And of course, I’m sorry for forcing everyone to come.”
