Stoltenberg told Britain’s Telegraph newspaper that NATO was discussing deploying more nuclear weapons, taking them out of storage and putting them on alert, given the growing threats from Russia and China.
He said NATO members are discussing using transparency about their nuclear arsenals as a deterrent.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Stoltenberg’s comments appeared to contradict a statement issued at a weekend conference in Switzerland that any threat or use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine’s favour would be impermissible.
Commenting on the NATO secretary general’s statement, Peskov said: “This is another escalation of tensions.”
NATO later sought to clarify Stoltenberg’s remarks, adding that there had been no major changes in its position on nuclear weapons.
“NATO is committed to ensuring a secure and effective nuclear deterrent,” explained NATO spokesperson Farahlala.
“To this end, a modernization program is underway that will enable the replacement of older weapons and aircraft. “Other than that, there are no major changes to our nuclear deterrent program,” she added.
Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Now she claims the United States and its European allies are pushing the world to the brink of nuclear conflict by supplying Ukraine with billions of dollars worth of weapons, some of which are being used to fight on Russian territory.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is technically prepared for a nuclear war and that Moscow could use nuclear weapons to defend itself in extreme circumstances.
