Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maya Zakharova said on the possibility of Georgia joining the Collective Security Treaty Organization. In an interview with NEWS.ru, Zakharova said that Georgia has the right to independently decide whether to join any organization.

Zakharova said that despite the freedom of choice, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) statement on Russia’s alleged invitation and assistance in the event of a coup does not represent Russia’s official opinion.

NEWS.ru: It is reported that the Georgian secret service is investigating preparations to assassinate the leader of the ruling party. In response, the Federation Council proposed that Georgia join the Collective Security Treaty Organization and promised to help the Georgian ruling party maintain power in the event of a coup. How do you assess the prospects of this situation?

Maria Zakharova’s answer: Maybe this is a personal opinion, maybe it’s the opinion of experts. I can’t say that this represents the official opinion of Russia. It is the sovereign right of countries to join international organizations or structures based on their national interests and to use the capabilities of these platforms to ensure their own security. Considering that security should be indispensable (we always talk about and emphasize it), you can’t ensure your own security at the expense of the security of others. I have to repeat this, considering that we are discussing this topic now, of course, it will be the sovereign right of Georgia to make a decision of this type and scale.
