Mira: ‘Waves for the brave’: This is how Peruvian surfers train for the Olympics in Teahupo’o
—How popular is Kimberly in Paris? Or is this just our optimism?
We have to be clear, it’s one of the favorites, not to mention one of the favorites. I think he’s fully capable of competing for a medal, although the medal is really not earned before the race, nor deserved, the medal is earned on the day. We arrived in the best possible way, looking for a version of Kimberly that maybe she didn’t perform so that she can feel good that day, just like we have imagined and dreamed for many years, and we want to execute it now.
— After being with her for almost three years, which athlete did you find? How is she today?
When she came with me, we knew the situation she was in when she came, almost wanting to retire and start over. This is her character, since he almost hit rock bottom after the Tokyo Olympics, he started a new process. It was starting from scratch, a new challenge, without much desire at the beginning, we must be clear. But little by little we prepared, evaluated, and each time the result was better. We gave her the specific load that she needed and she responded very well. Her assumptions about this program, which we thought was a strong one, got better and better, and she adapted more and more, and I must be clear about her professionalism: very focused, very professional, very clear about what she wanted.
——How was that process?
Since we started all this, we did 10,000 tests in October 2021 and we were able to evaluate very well. We had to do a lot of things, I had a lot of injuries and some surgeries. Maybe another athlete that I didn’t know if I would continue to train, an athlete that had problems because she didn’t know if she wanted to continue her career. Giving her a new direction, a new race to start from scratch makes us very proud to have arrived at the Kimberly we know now, an athlete who is confident, secure and fights for number one. If one day she didn’t feel good at the World Championships, she would only be able to finish fourth. What we have seen, what we have discovered and what we have turned Kimberly into is amazing.
— There’s been a lot of discussion about your biotype, what makes you a better athlete?
It’s a combination of everything that has led to the level she has reached. It’s a combination of their physical abilities and resistance. Living at high altitude is important, but not decisive. The precise program she needed has been carried out so that she can reach these levels. He has been at a high level for many years, and at best he could only fight for seventh or eighth place in the World Championships. After reaching these levels, little by little, discovering all their advantages, we can use their abilities, these levels that we have seen in the World Championships and on tour have been reached, and now we are about to participate in our first Olympic Games.
——What changes did she undergo in order to win the world championship?
We had to do a lot of things. He had a lot of injuries, some surgeries. Maybe another athlete, I don’t know if she will continue to train, she is a problematic athlete… in the sense that she doesn’t know if she wants to continue her career. Giving her a new direction, a new race to start from scratch makes us proud to have arrived at the Kimberly we know now, an athlete who is confident, secure and fighting for the first place.
—What can the Cuenca you train give you, unlike Huancayo?
In Cuenca we want everything to be close, to stay focused, to be concentrated, to be calm. The altitude is lower than in Huancayo, 3,200 meters above sea level, here it is 2,500 meters, we can do some training at a slightly lower altitude, and if we are looking for a hot climate, we have it nearby. It is the same when we camp abroad, when the whole team goes to Europe, to Rio Mayor, it is basically the same.
——How is she doing after her recent victory? From the looks of it, it seems very low-key.
I don’t think she’s low key, she’s focused on what she wants, we have social media athletes today, she’s focused on her preparation. The goal is to be 100% ready, that’s one of the positive aspects of it, it’s not based on external concerns, it’s based on internal concerns. We know what level we’re at. Socially, we’re not great at communicating, but I know she’s a confident athlete, but we know what we have. She’s focused, confident, knows where she’s coming from and where she’s going.
——What are your expectations for the game in Paris?
For the women it is a tactical test and there is no need to favour one side over the other, that is why we have to be very strong. I do not want to have a test that is either in your favour or against you. We want it to be able to respond in the best way to any situation that may arise. The goal is to be at the best possible level. If we have already found the key, it is to continue to look for something that will further improve its performance to have its biggest version in Paris.
——He has defeated his opponents. How much information is there about them?
Similar things are seen in all the tests, in some of them we already know how they are going to arrive. There can’t be a lot of variation either because there are some frictions throughout the year. There are different situations that change the whole perspective of the test. So the last part of the preparation is to stay healthy, stay fit, stay active and still improve your performance.
