Judo has brought Kosovo three Olympic gold medals in the past twelve years, at the Rio, Tokyo and Paris Olympics:
Majlinda Kelmendi at the Rio Olympics (2016) and Nora Gjakova and Distria Krasniqi at the Tokyo Olympics (2020) each won a gold medal.
Distria Krasniqi (2024) from Paris won the silver medal and Laura Fazliu the bronze medal.
Kosovo has won five medals and is one of the most successful nations in judo.
But even the most optimistic people did not believe Kosovo would be so successful.
So far, 33 Olympic Games have been held, and none of the 69 countries that regularly participate in the Olympics have won an Olympic medal this time.
Permanent participants such as Bangladesh (160 million people), Nepal, Yemen, Madagascar, etc. did not win any medals.
The main reasons for their failure are as follows:
1. The country’s economic strength is weak, and nepotism and usurpation of the throne are serious.
2. Lack of modern infrastructure and skilled personnel to match the population of these states.
So far, 69 countries have yet to win a single Olympic medal despite regularly participating in the Olympics!
Other European countries that did not win medals included Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Andorra, Monaco and Malta.
The latter won the first bronze medal in the rifle shooting event.
Unfortunately, even 110 years after receiving citizenship, Albania still does not receive a medal!
Surprisingly, the same bad situation is also seen in the Albanian Olympic Committee and the Kosovo Olympic Committee.
Many athletes from Albania during the dictatorship managed to flee their homeland to Greece, where the Greek government granted them political asylum.
They won 8 medals for the country in weightlifting and javelin.
Piro Dhima won three gold medals and a bronze medal.
Luan Sabani won two silver medals and a bronze medal under the Greek flag.
Mirela Manjadinis won three bronze medals in the javelin throw.
Two Kosovar athletes with legal citizenship won medals for Germany: Luan Krasniqi in boxing and Fatmir Bajrami in football.
The role of former Yugoslav countries and Kosovar Albanians in the Olympic Games
Wrestler Shaban Terstena won two medals, a gold in Los Angeles and a silver in Seoul, becoming the greatest athlete ever to come from the Albanian region for 40 years in a row.
He was only 19 years old and was, and still is, the youngest competitor to win a gold medal in Los Angeles.
In the same year, he was named Athlete of the Year at an extraordinary competition in the former Yugoslavia, a country with 22 million inhabitants!
He was also named the Athlete of the 20th Century in the entire Albanian-speaking region.
Other former Yugoslav Albanians who won medals were:
1. Boxing: Bronze Medal – Aziz Salihu
2. Wrestling: Shaban Sejdiu, two bronze medals.
In 12 years of independence, Kosovo athletes have won more medals than in 35 years of Yugoslav rule.
Three gold medals: Majlinda Kelmendi, Distria Krasniqi and Nora Gjakova, as well as silver for Distria Krasniqi and bronze for Laura Fazliun – five medals in total.
The situation in other sports associations in the country is either deplorable or similar to that in Bangladesh.
Yeah?
Because for thirty years, the most irresponsible, unscrupulous, greedy and ignorant people have been misusing sports funds.
On the other hand, reform is lacking, and amateurism, cynicism, nepotism and hypocrisy are prevalent.
This time in Paris, more than 35 visitors representing their respective associations took a meditative stroll.
So in the other 27 associations there is only improvisation and cheating, as if there were no sports awards for these events at the Olympics.
Why did this happen?
The national sports decision-making body has not reflected on or criticized itself for 24 years, and this is where the accusations are due.
After 40 years of rule, Shabantestnes’ success is comparable to that of Krasniqi District
Back in 1984, Shaban Testner won a gold medal in wrestling at the Los Angeles Olympics, and four years later won a silver medal in wrestling in Seoul.
He is also the winner of all gold medals at the Balkan Championships, European Championships and many other international championships.
In short, he is the most decorated Albanian athlete for 40 consecutive years, or more precisely, the torchbearer of pinnacle achievement.
Fortunately, exactly forty years later, Distri Krasniqi finally matched Shaban Termenen at the Olympics.
Therefore, Deistria Krasniqi and Shaban Trstena are the greatest athletes in the history of the Albanian nation.
