SEOUL: Korean Air will stop serving instant noodles, the popular South Korean snack known as ramen, on its long-haul flights in a move aimed at tackling rising incidents of aircraft turbulence.
Concerns about turbulence have grown since a Singapore Airlines flight from London crashed in May. Encountering a serious incident One person was killed and dozens were injured.
“This decision is part of proactive safety measures in response to increased aircraft turbulence and is aimed at preventing burn accidents,” Korean Air said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 1).
Cup noodles are a popular item in the airline’s inflight service and have attracted much attention on social media.
Korean Air said last month that turbulence incidents were increasing and it would end long-haul and medium-haul service 20 minutes earlier, ending service 40 minutes before landing.
Hot noodle cups will no longer be offered to passengers in cramped economy class seats starting Aug. 15. Snacks will instead be sandwiches, corn dogs and hot pockets, the airline said.
Korean Air is one of 21 airlines to join the turbulence real-time data exchange platform launched by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in 2020.
