Mr Fadillah also called on the public not to speculate on the matter.

“We know that every time an accident happens, many Google experts turn up. Please don’t do that because it won’t help. Let the authorities investigate. Right now, our focus is on search and rescue efforts,” he said, adding that the public should also be concerned about the victims’ families.

Ms Vijayaletchumy was reportedly on a two-month vacation in Malaysia with her family and would return home soon.

Her son, Mr M Suria, 25, earlier told Bernama that he had just tattooed her name on his left arm. He last spoke to her at about 1.30am on the day of the incident and rushed to Kuala Lumpur from Thailand after learning about it from his brother-in-law.

Second sinkhole heightens business concerns

The emergence of the second sinkhole has heightened concerns among merchants along India Masjid Road, a popular tourist strip that is home to department stores and gold shops.

More shops there have been open since Friday, but shop assistants said people were still mostly avoiding the area.

“People are still afraid to come here,” said Ms. Salin Shamima Bahurddin, 47, who works at a goldsmith shop. “This second cave-in will make it worse.”
