Kishane Thompson leads the way as Jamaican advances to 100m semifinals

Paris France — Jamaican sprinter Kishane Thompson led teammates Oblique Seville and Akeem Blake into the men’s 100m semifinals after advancing in the preliminaries. Paris Olympics Saturday.

The trio showed off their quality at the Stade de France, with Thompson setting the tone in the first round.

Thompson, who holds the world best time this year with a time of 9.77 seconds, won his heat comfortably by 10. Despite a delay due to a false start protest by Britain’s Jeremiah Azou, Thompson kept his composure to win comfortably, securing his place in the semi-finals.

Sevilla also performed well in the fourth round, with a time of 9.99 seconds. He was followed by Japan’s Abdul Hakim Sani Brown, who finished slightly faster at 10.02 seconds.

In the sixth round, Black finished second behind South Africa’s Akani Simbine with times of 10.03 and 10.06. There were four Caribbean competitors in the event, including Ricoy Brathwaite of the British Virgin Islands, who finished third with a time of 10.13, and Wanya McCoy of the Bahamas, who finished fifth with a time of 10.24.

Other outstanding performances

Other standouts in the heats included Noah Lyles, who finished second in 10.04 seconds, behind Britain’s Louie Hinchliffe, who finished in 9.98 seconds. Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala finished second in 10.08 seconds, and reigning Olympic champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs of Italy finished second in 10.05 seconds, behind Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi (10.02 seconds).

Kenneth Bednarek of the United States led the fifth round in 9.97 seconds, narrowly beating Emmanuel Essemé of Cameroon (9.98 seconds) and Andre de Grasse of Canada (10.07 seconds). Fred Klee of the United States easily won the final round in 9.97 seconds, ahead of Letsile Tebogo of Botswana (10.01 seconds) and Zanell Hughes of Britain (10.03 seconds).

In Sunday’s semi-finals, Sevilla will face Lyles, Hinchliffe and Essemé in the first semi-final. Blake, Tebogo, Jacobs, Simbine and Bednarek will compete in the second semi-final, while Thompson, Kerley, De Grasse, Omanyara, Hughes and Sani Brown will face off in a hotly contested third semi-final.

The top two finishers in each race and the two fastest losers will advance to the finals, which will conclude at 9:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. ET) on Sunday, day four.

Another activity that has attracted Jamaican attention is Adele Tracy Tracy did not perform well in the women’s 800m repechage, finishing fifth in the preliminaries with a time of 2:03.67 minutes. Tracy has recently recovered from an injury and did not perform at her best level. However, she still hopes to perform better in the 1500m race that starts on Tuesday morning.
