King Tupou VI inaugurates new Royal Archives in Tufumahina

Last Friday, July 5, His Majesty King Tupou VI inaugurated the new Royal Archives building in Tufumahina, an initiative of the Royal Archives Bureau with the support of a 3.3 million panga donation from Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, China.

The Royal Archives now has its own special house To house valuable records of Tonga’s history and culture, ensuring they are preserved for future generations.

In 2019, King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipa’u visited the National Library of New Zealand to discuss the upgrade of the Tonga Palace Archives. During their visit, they viewed Tongan archival material, including a video recording of Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Tonga in 1954, and various Tongan government records held in the Library’s collection.

In 1975, Tonga celebrated the centenary of its written constitution, and the original was returned to the Royal Palace in 1980 after being kept in Canberra for a period of time.

Support for the Royal Archives includes donations such as storage materials for the Auckland War Memorial Museum in 2020. In 2014, the Chinese Ambassador to Tonga provided Tonga with digitization equipment worth $40,414 and a camera to help preserve historical documents.

Construction of the project is being managed by Ca’bella Pacific Construction.
