Kimberley Lecourt-Pienaar was ill and had to use her reserves to complete yesterday’s marathon stage.
Kimberly LeCoultre-Pienaar had a tough day yesterday in the Women’s Giro d’Italia. Stage 6 was the longest stage of the 35th edition of the race, covering 159km between San Benedetto del Tronto and Chieti.
The 2024 double champion of Mauritius found the final part of the race very difficult, especially the climb towards Chieti, and revealed that she was ill and tried her best to hold on.
As a result, she had to decide to leave out some of the favorites, including Italy’s Elisa Longo-Borghini, who was wearing the pink jersey, Belgium’s Lotte Kopecky, Denmark’s Cecilie Utterup Ludwig and France’s Juliette Labus.
Kimberly would cross the finish line in 22nd place, 58 seconds behind Germany’s Liane Lippert (Movistar), who beat American Ruth Edwards (Human Powered Health) and Italian Erica Magnaldi (UAE Team EDQ) in the three-way sprint.
Elisa Longo-Bolchini had to work hard to limit the damage and maintain her first place in the overall standings. She was 21 seconds behind Lippert at the line. Labos and Kopecky arrived in sixth and seventh place at the same time with the pink jersey.
German rider Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon// SRAM Racing) finished eighth in the stage and overtook our compatriot to take fifth place overall. In fact, Kimberly is now sixth, 1:28 behind Longo-Borghiny and 22 seconds behind Niedermaier.
Today, the Queen stage of the Tour de France is coming up, with 120km to the famous Blockhaus. This climb is one of the great classics of the Giro d’Italia. For Kimberly, it is important to recover well in order to be ready. As she said yesterday, “Tomorrow (today) is a new day!”
