Swakop Uranium, the Chinese company that owns the Khasab uranium mine, confirmed that an accident occurred at the mine on Wednesday, July 24.

Swakop Uranium spokeswoman Winnie Mukupki said the accident occurred at around 12:50 when a truck owned and operated by mining contractor Northern Company overturned while the driver was unloading. The truck fell to the bottom of the mine’s stockpile.

Khasab’s emergency team quickly arrived at the scene and the driver was treated and taken to a private hospital in Swakopmund.

“He is currently under observation but the test result is positive,” Mukupki said.

Irvinne Simataa, executive vice president of Swakop Uranium, confirmed that Northern Uranium’s operations at the mine had been suspended while the accident was investigated.

All other operations were resumed after all employees and relevant departments were informed of the incident.
