July 1, 2024 (Omdurman) – The Sudanese army announced on Monday that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) partially destroyed the Halfaya Bridge over the Nile River. The bridge is located in the north of the Sudanese capital and connects Khartoum Bahri in the east and Omdurman in the west.
Witnesses in Omdurman confirmed to Sudan Tribune that they heard a loud explosion just before midnight on Sunday, similar to the explosion heard when the Shambhat Bridge, which also connects Khartoum-Bahri and Omdurman from the south, was destroyed.
Sudanese army spokesman Brigadier General Nabil Abdullah said in a press statement that the rapid security forces destroyed the eastern section of the Halfaya Bridge on Sunday evening, causing damage to the concrete structure of the bridge.
The Indian Emergency Force controls the Halfaya Bridge from the Bahri side of Khartoum, while the Indian Army controls the Omdurman side of the bridge, which was completed in 2010.
Brigadier General Abdullah further stated: “The militias have attempted to destroy infrastructure and vital facilities to cover up their failure to achieve their malicious objectives, which they believe will prevent the armed forces from fulfilling their duty to cleanse the motherland of filth.”
Last November, the Shambat Bridge connecting Bahri in Khartoum and eastern Omdurman was destroyed, with the Sudanese army and the Rapid Security Forces accusing each other of being responsible for the destruction of the bridge, which was built in the 1960s.
A week after the destruction of the Shambhat Bridge, the Rapid Support Forces rushed to the city of Jabal Awliya, about 45 kilometers south of the capital Khartoum, and destroyed the Jabal Awliya Dam Bridge. The warring parties once again accused each other of destroying the facility built in 1937.
The bridges in Khartoum state are of strategic importance to both sides in the conflict as they are used to deliver logistical supplies and support during the fighting.
