Kenyan President Ruto disbands entire cabinet

In a televised address, President Ruto announced: “After careful consideration, listening carefully to the views of the Kenyan people and a comprehensive assessment of the performance of my Cabinet and its achievements and challenges, I have decided, pursuant to the powers conferred upon me by Sections 152(1) and 152(5)(b) of the Constitution and Section 12 of the Attorney General’s Office Act, to immediately remove all Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney General from the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya, with the exception of the Cabinet Secretary to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs.”

Dr Ruto said he would work with other political players to reshuffle the Cabinet.

The President said that in the meantime, government operations will continue under the guidance of the Chief Secretary and other officials concerned.

He added: “I will immediately engage in broad consultations across sectors and political factions to form a broad-based government that will assist me in accelerating and speeding up the necessary, urgent and irreversible fundamental program to reduce the debt burden, increase domestic resources, expand job opportunities, eliminate waste and unnecessary duplication in government machinery, and eliminate the dragon of corruption, thereby making government lean, cheap, effective and efficient.”

On Tuesday, the president announced plans for a “broad political arrangement”, suggesting he may be considering absorbing the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), led by Odinga, into Kenya’s embattled Kwanza government.

“Based on the referendum results, it is imperative for me as President of the Republic to restructure the Government so that it is more united and better serves the people of Kenya,” Mr Kibaki said.

“I have ordered that all posts of ministers and assistant ministers remain vacant. Accordingly, the incumbents of the said posts shall cease to hold their respective posts with immediate effect,” he said.
