Kenya Railways launched new premium carriages on its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger trains on Wednesday, August 14, marking a major upgrade in its service offerings. During the inaugural voyage, more than 20 African ambassadors based in Nairobi were invited to experience the new service from Nairobi to Mombasa.
Kenya Railways General Manager, Mr Philip Mainga, welcomed the ambassadors on board and said: “I want to tell you that you are the first passengers to fly on our SGR premium class test flight. Please relax and enjoy the snacks before dinner.”
The move symbolizes Kenya Railways’ commitment to improving the travel experience on one of its most important routes.
The premium service, which costs Ksh12,000 one-way for adults, Ksh6,000 for children aged 3 to 11, and Ksh20,000 return, is designed to provide passengers travelling between Nairobi and Mombasa with a more luxurious and comfortable journey.

Mohammed Dagar, Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, who was present at the launch ceremony, announced that the government plans to extend the SGR Phase 2B from Naivasha to Kisumu, a total of 362 kilometers. This phase will include a branch line to the Kisumu Port.
“We will also construct Phase 2C, a 106km section from Kisumu to Malaba,” he added, highlighting the government’s vision to expand rail connectivity.
Dr. Abraham Korir Singhe, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Affairs of Kenya, also spoke at the event, stressing that connectivity is crucial for the development, transformation and progress of the African continent.
“We need a connected Africa, which is the vision of the African Continental Free Trade Area. We cannot achieve the African Continental Free Trade Area without connectivity.” He said.
