ROME, Italy — On August 30, Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson will join a group of top sprinters in the Golden Event Pietro Mennea in Rome, a much-anticipated stop on the Wanda Diamond League Tour.
The 100m race promises to be a thrilling rematch of the Paris Olympics final, with some of the world’s top sprinters set to once again go head to head on the track.
Thompson, who won silver in Paris in 9.79 seconds, is the world leader this season, having clocked 9.77 in June. In Paris, he lost to American Noah Lyles by just five thousandths of a second, despite the two runners having the same time.
Rome will also feature a strong field, including American Fred Klee, an Olympic bronze medalist who ran 9.81 in Paris. Italy’s Marcel Jacobs, the 2021 Tokyo champion, will also be back, finishing fifth in Paris but still a force to be reckoned with. Botswana’s Letesile Tebogo will also be in the mix, having finished sixth in Paris before winning the 200m final.
Sprint talent show
The Rome field will be a showcase of sprinting talent, with six men who have run under 9.86 seconds this season set to compete. They include Christian Coleman of the United States, Ferdinand Omanyara of Kenya, Abdul Hakeem Sani Brown of Japan, Akeem Blake of Jamaica and rising star Chitulu Ali of Italy.

For Fred Kerley, the Golden Festival held special significance as he had won the 100m titles in Rome 2022 and Florence 2023. Meanwhile, Marcell Jacobs returned to the Olympic Stadium less than three months after winning the European Championships gold medal in 10.02 seconds.
The match will be one of the highlights of the Golden Event Pietro Mennea, with fans eagerly awaiting the rematch between Thompson and Kerley and the potential for the best performance of the new season.
