Officials from Lotus Resources, which is responsible for the Kayelekra uranium mine in Karonga, will fly to the country next week to assess when to reopen the mine.
Lotus Resources holds an 85% stake in the Kayelekera uranium mine in Karonga.
Kayelekra uranium mine general manager Theo Keyter said the management team will be in Karonga from August 24 to 27, 2024, and they intend to reopen the mine “as soon as possible” and provide employment opportunities for about 500 Malawians.
“Only people with specific skills will be sent abroad, but we will focus on hiring local Malawians,” Kate said.
Kit made the remarks during a visit to the mine by various stakeholders, including representatives from the National Planning Commission (NPC), the Presidential Delivery Unit, the Mwapata Institute, the United Nations Development Programme and the Ministry of Finance, to assess the status of the mine before resuming production as planned.
NPC director general Thomas Munthali said the commission and other stakeholders were ready to support the mine’s revival.
Reports released show that Kayelekera will require an investment of about K154 billion over the next 10 years to restart operations.
