Parents and guardians in the Kasenenwa district of the Eastern Province are being encouraged to educate young people about sexuality.
Chisomo Community Program Executive Director Annie Chiseni explained that the move will help ensure that young people receive correct information on sexual reproductive health.
Ms Chiseni found that most young people have wrong ideas about sex, which are usually acquired from the wrong sources.
“Our children are no longer living the same way as we did in our time, they have more information than we did. So if we as parents don’t sit down and discuss these things with them, they will end up getting wrong information from the outside world,” she said.
She stressed the need for parents and guardians to be open enough with teenagers to protect them from selfish people who might feed them wrong information.
Ms Chisenyi added that the development will also help children form sound judgement on different information given to them.
“Let parents talk to their kids about sex so that when they go out, if they get the wrong message, they don’t take it as gospel truth,” she said.
She further called on stakeholders to play a leading role in raising awareness among young people on sexual reproductive health and preventing them from engaging in sexual activities at an early age.
