…Vice-Chancellor in hiding amid homosexuality allegations

Author: Beverage Reporter
Kamuzu College, known as the Eton of the African bush, is mired in scandal and its reputation is in jeopardy. The prestigious institution, known for its rigorous academic standards and classy image, is now in crisis as Vice-Chancellor Andrew Hubbard goes into hiding amid serious allegations.
Five individuals, including three minors, accused Hubbard of enticing them into homosexual acts, casting a shadow over the expensive Kasungu facility.
At the heart of the controversy is Hubbard’s alleged inappropriate relationships with junior staff and minors within the Kamuzu College (KA) community.
The details of the allegations are both shocking and deeply disturbing. Although there is no evidence that he has direct contact with KA students, the possibility remains a subject of speculation and concern. “We don’t know yet, but we can’t rule it out,” an anonymous source at KA told the Investigative Journalism Platform (PIJ).
The charges are serious: Hubbard, who has been on the run since a hearing two weeks ago, is accused of engaging in homosexual acts with three boys from Mtunsama Primary School, next door to the college.
In addition, two KA support staff also came forward to claim that they were coerced into sexual acts in exchange for employment and promotion.
Another source with knowledge of the investigation confirmed this to PIJ.
“It is true that he (Hubbard) was fired for enticing two boys into homosexual relations. He employed one boy as a special education teacher and the other as a cook in the school cafeteria. He told them to have homosexual relations to show their gratitude to him. The guardians of the two boys were teachers at the academy and they were the ones who reported him after the children complained to them.”
The minors, all under the age of 18, claimed that money was offered in exchange for sex. The revelations caused an uproar within the institution and the community at large.
“He is currently on the run and law enforcement officials are looking for him to answer charges of child homosexuality,” the source said.
Hubbard is on the run
PIJ called Hubbard Tuesday morning and he answered the phone but hung up after we raised the subject.
KA President Lambert Knott was more interested in finding out the source of our BroadCast Unitedligence than answering our questions.
“This information is not entirely true. But I want to know where you got this information,” he said. When we refused to reveal the source, he cut off contact.
But he later called to say the official response to our inquiry was “no comment.”
Alinane M’manga, the human resources manager at the high-payroll agency, told PIJ he was unaware of the issue, and even when asked if Hubbard had been at work in the past two weeks, he said he did not know.
“I don’t know anything. I’m not sure if he came to work or not because I was not informed by the management or the board,” he said.
PIJ contacted a KA staff member who confirmed that Hubbard had been missing for two weeks.
“The management and board are aware of this but are trying to tread carefully for fear of damaging the reputation of Ngwazi School,” he said.
He added that no one could know how long Hubbard’s pranks had been going on.
“We can’t be sure, but he has been here since 2019,” he said.
According to sources, Hubbard was summoned for a hearing two weeks before his disappearance.
“It was like a hearing, but we didn’t know what happened because soon after, Hubbard disappeared. So, we suspected that management was covering up for him,” he said.
On Tuesday morning, PIJ tried to contact Dr. Patrick Chirwa, the board member who participated in the investigation and chaired the hearing, but his assistant kept telling us that he had a busy schedule and referred us back to the principal.
For his part, Parent Teachers Association president Wanangwa Mbereka told PIJ he had not heard of the issue.
“If this is true, then I commend the school management and board for the action taken because such a person is a danger to the boys around him. I will consult with the principal to get to the bottom of this matter. As a parent, this is of utmost concern and worry.”
Kasungu police spokesman Joseph Kachiko told PIJ that we have not received any report on the matter.
“No report has been received at Kasungu police station and I have also checked with Mtuntama police station and they have not received any such report either,” he said.
However, a senior police officer in Kasungu told PIJ that they had noticed a number of high-profile visitors to the facility in the past two weeks.
“When we inquired, we heard that the board had called an emergency meeting because there was an issue involving the vice-chancellor. If this issue has not been reported to the police, I am sure they are trying to cover it up and trying to avoid reporting it to the authorities.”
Kamuzu College was founded in 1981 by Malawi’s first President, Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, whose principles of integrity, responsibility and hard work still underpin all aspects of learning at Kamuzu College.
According to the institution’s website, the founder’s vision was to create a school that would educate the whole child. “He stressed the importance of sports, drama, music and technical subjects alongside the more traditional academic subjects. We continue to deliver on his vision for the academy, working hard to develop the individuality of each student.”
“Our goal is to create an environment where every student can find the courage to bring out the best in themselves and become the future leaders of Malawi.” – PIJ Malawi
