The stunning turnaround in the 2024 presidential race is set to reach new heights when Vice President Kamala Harris unveils her running mate on Tuesday after a series of events that has embattled Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Harris will attend a rally in Philadelphia alongside her vice presidential pick that will kick off a joint sprint across the electoral map more than two weeks after President Biden shelved his own reelection bid.
Sources told CNN that in the final hours of the search, after a compressed review period, Harris narrowed her field to two candidates – Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, 51, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Waltz, 60, though Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly remained in the race as of Monday afternoon.
Shapiro is a rising star in the Democratic Party whose popularity in the Commonwealth could be a boon to Harris’ campaign in perhaps the most critical swing states. Waltz is an experienced progressive leader whose image could help solidify the blue wall states of the Midwest, including Wisconsin and Michigan, which could be Harris’ best path to the White House.
The dramatic performances will give the vice president new opportunities to build momentum for her campaign, which has energized a party that looked doomed in November and turned the race into a 50-50 struggle in a polarized nation. Her relative youth, 59, creates a stark generation gap with the 78-year-old Trump, as questions about Biden’s age and acumen in a possible second term are moot.
While the Democratic vice presidential nomination is the focus of the campaign, Monday’s new developments – in addition to a race that has been on a major trajectory since Trump escaped assassination and Biden dropped out – suggest there could be new twists before November. (CNN)
