With regard to leptospirosis, particularly the type transmitted through rat urine, nine Mauritians have died.
Health Minister Kailesh Jagutpal attended a press conference yesterday. He revealed that there have been 6,738 cases of dengue since December last year, with eight deaths. Moreover, there are currently 39 active cases in the country, of which four were recorded between Monday and yesterday. He believes that this shows a downward trend in dengue cases. He also reviewed the efforts of the authorities and ministries concerned to fight dengue through cleaning of multiple areas, coordination between officials and even fumigation.
The minister said that before the press conference, a meeting was held with stakeholders to develop an action plan to address the possible spread of mosquitoes around September (early summer). He added that the latter are now focusing mainly on awareness, but also on cleaning, treatment and even how to target the areas that will be affected.
As for leptospirosis, nine people have died and there are currently four active cases in the country, all of whom are hospitalized.
