Juventus coach Thiago Motta calls for more precise attacking play

TURIN, Italy: Juventus coach Thiago Motta said his players should be more precise in attack as his side drew 0-0 at home to Roma in Serie A on Sunday.

Juventus started the season with 3-0 wins over Como and Verona, but then dropped their first points of the league season.

“I think it was a fair result, a close game. We didn’t concede a goal and we have one more point in the table,” Motta told a news conference.

“I’m very happy with the team and their commitment. We could have done better today in the attacking phase, but the other team knew how to defend and not give the opponent any space.”

This is the first time Juventus has kept a clean sheet in their first three Serie A games of a season since the 2014-15 season.

“We were crazy today. Sometimes we were good, sometimes they were good, it was a very difficult and close game,” added Motta.

“We didn’t find the right moments to attack Roma, which has to be emphasised, they are a great team. Offensively we can do better.”

Juventus’ only shot on target came just before half-time from striker Dusan Vlahovic, who opened his account with a brace against Verona this season.

Against Roma he had more attempts, but none of them posed a real threat in the visitors’ box.

“Vlahovic? I know him very well. He always helps the team,” Motta said.

“Sometimes he scores, sometimes he doesn’t, but in my team, as a striker, I don’t focus only on scoring. He has to continue like this.”

The new Juventus boss, who replaces the sacked Massimiliano Allegri, admits that the goalscoring is not just the responsibility of the strikers.

“(We should) feed the attackers the ball in an ideal way to complete the action,” he said.

“We have to get our offensive players in the best possible condition. … Today we had more difficulty in those moments. (But) we can improve with the quality of the team.”
