The Jamaica Urban Transport Company (JUTC) recently added 100 new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to its fleet, which is expected to achieve significant savings and improve operational efficiency.
“By running these 100 buses on CNG fuel, we will reduce our fuel costs by 200 percent, while also solving the long-standing diesel problem that has hampered JUTC’s efficiency,” explained Daryl Vaz, Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transportation.
He spoke at the official handover ceremony of the buses held recently at the JUTC station in Portmore, St. Catherine.
“Currently, it costs $60,000 to fill up a diesel Dragon Bus, while it costs $20,000 to fill up a CNG bus. So, we save $40,000 per bus. That means we save $4,000,000 every time we fill up these 100 buses,” the minister added.
The government has also expanded the CNG capacity at the Portmore filling station from one pump to three, effectively increasing JUTC’s refueling capacity by 300 per cent.
Switching to CNG, which is generally cheaper than diesel, also solves other problems within JUTC, including diesel theft and high fuel costs.
“We have to protect these buses; they are equipped with cameras and other features, but we have to protect our investment. I will lobby for tougher penalties for those who try to damage and destroy this huge investment,” said Minister Vaz, who is confident of the support of his colleagues and the public.
JUTC’s investment in CNG technology not only promises significant savings, but also demonstrates its commitment to improving public transportation while protecting taxpayer dollars.
Adding buses is a key initiative to modernize Jamaica’s public transportation system and improve the overall passenger experience.
