Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed on Thursday criticised Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka for claiming to be the main opposition leader.
Speaking at a thanksgiving ceremony for Finance Minister John Mbadi, Junet accused Kalonzo of appointing himself as minister, stressing that Kenya’s constitutional provisions do not support such a declaration.
He noted that the government has yet to set up an official opposition office as called for in the National Dialogue Commission (NADCO) report.
Junet reiterated his stance, announcing plans to work with Parliamentary Majority Leader Kimani Ijongwa to ensure the establishment of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition.
“I heard our brothers claim that we as members of the ODM party are in power and they are the new opposition leaders,” Junet said.

“Nowhere in the constitution does the role of the Leader of Opposition be emphasised. As the minority members in Parliament, we will work with the majority leader, Kimani Ijongwa, to establish the position of the Official Leader of Opposition.”
Junet claimed that he was currently serving as the interim opposition leader due to Raila Odinga’s campaign for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
He argued that his position as minority leader in parliament gave him the authority to take on Odinga’s duties.
“So, don’t let anyone take over a position that doesn’t exist yet. Let’s deal with this in parliament first and then someone can take over the position.” Junet said.
“Currently, I am the leader of the opposition in Kenya and because I am the minority leader, you cannot replace me. Those who want to work in the opposition should contact me.”
