London, May 28: Dame Judi Dench hinted that her stellar 60-year acting career may be coming to an end during her recent appearance at London’s Chelsea Flower Show. When asked about her upcoming projects, the 89-year-old Oscar-winning actress candidly replied, “No, no. I can’t even see it,” Deadline reported.
Tony Award-winning actress Dench revealed in 2012 that she had been diagnosed with advanced macular degeneration, a disease that has severely affected her vision over the years. According to the National Institutes of Health, macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye disease among older adults that can lead to permanent and rapid vision loss. In 2019, nearly 19.8 million Americans aged 40 and older had AMD, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Last year, in an interview with The Graham Norton Show, Dench admitted that she faces challenges reading scripts and remembering lines due to her failing eyesight. She confessed that memorizing lines, which once came effortlessly, is now becoming increasingly difficult. Despite her extraordinary memory, she now relies on friends to repeat her lines to her as a learning method.
Reflecting on the evolution of her acting approach during her visual impairment, Dench expressed resilience, saying, “You find a way to overcome things that you find very difficult.” Despite her handicap, she remains active in the film industry. Dench was nominated for the 2022 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Belfast. In addition, she starred in the 2022 Christmas movie Gremlins with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, and starred in the comedy Hallelujah in the same year.
