PARIS, Aug 10 (AP): Nikola Jokic recorded his fifth Olympic triple-double as Serbia defeated Germany 93-83 to claim the Olympic men’s basketball bronze medal on Saturday.
Jokic finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to help Serbia capture its first medal since silver in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. In the semifinals, Serbia came close to defeating the four-time defending gold medalist United States before bouncing back.
Vasilije Micic scored 19 points and Bogdan Bogdanovic added 16 points.
The game was a rematch of last year’s FIBA World Cup final, which Germany won. Serbia led throughout the game, leading by as many as 19 points in the third quarter.
Franz Wagner scored 19 points to lead Germany. Mortitz Wagner added 16 points.
The World Cup triumph was part of a 12-match winning streak in major international tournaments for Germany, which won its first four games in Paris to reach the semifinals. But they have lost their last two games, also falling to hosts France on Thursday.
At the end of the fourth quarter, Germany launched a counterattack, and Wagner made a layup to reduce Serbia’s lead to 82-74. Serbia then used an 11-4 counterattack offensive to extend the score to more than double digits.
