White rose arrangements decorate the Jewish cemetery in Peace Park.
The remains of Johnny Czarninski rest in that spot, along with the graves of his parents, Polish Jews Alfredo Czarninski and Ruth Baier.
Johnny Czarninski is the executive director of Corporación El Rosado and one of Ecuador’s most prominent businessmen.
His wife Nilly Shefi de Czarninski and children Taly, Yael and Gad, as well as his grandchildren, said their final goodbyes to their husband, father and grandfather.
“I came here because I worked for your company. I worked there for many years, and this is my gratitude.” A former worker couldn’t hold back tears. Her husband accompanied her to the cemetery and comforted her.
The ceremony was based on Jewish funeral traditions. The hearse arrived around 5:10 p.m. Relatives followed the instructions of the rabbi, who is considered a spiritual leader, and wore black and white clothing and a hat.

As is tradition, the sons and grandsons carried the simple wooden coffin. The rabbi conducted readings and recited prayers. Then, one of the sons cut some of the hair of a certain relative. According to some Jewish traditions, this is the act of tearing clothes, an outward sign of mourning and acceptance of death.
Finally, around 5:30 p.m., family and close friends shoveled dirt onto the coffin at the Jewish cemetery. The ceremony was brief and quiet.
Who is Johnny Czarninski, president of Corporación El Rosado?
Czarninski, 76, who was diagnosed with cancer, was the son of Alfredo Czarninski, a Polish Jewish immigrant who arrived at the port of La Libertad on the ship Reina del Pacífico and moved to Guayaquil in 1936. He then founded Salón El Rosado in 1937.
Chaninsky witnessed how his father succeeded in the city that welcomed him and started a family with his mother, Ruth Beyer. His arrival marked the beginning of Nazi persecution. (I)
