The Joggers’ Organization has expressed appreciation for the private sector’s support for its project to ensure that the Matkenya Health Centre is equipped with solar energy.

Joab Frank Chakhaza, the Joggers in Action publicity director, was speaking at the Gate Way Shopping Centre in Lilongwe during the marathon, which was held to raise funds for the project.

Speaking after completing the 42km run, Chakaza said he was glad that the private sector did help them.

“It has been an exciting journey. It has been a revelatory journey and we are overwhelmed by the support from sponsors, agencies and different organisations. The initial target was to raise K10 million so that we could purchase solar equipment to donate and I am glad that we achieved our target,” he said.

Chakhaza said the group also aimed to raise K3 million for marathon prize money, which has now been fully achieved.

Lilongwe Mayor Esther Sagawa hailed the initiative by Operation Joggers, saying it would help ensure the good health of participants.

Sagawa urged members to always consider Lilongwe as a clean and green city.

In her remarks, the Nursing and Midwifery Officer at the Matkenya Health Centre, Beatrice Moyo, said the solar energy installation is expected to enable the facility to provide maternal delivery services and reduce the burden on pregnant women who currently have to travel to the Dowa Regional Hospital, more than 23 kilometres away, for delivery services.

Moyo commended the Joggers for such a strong project.

Meanwhile, Sam Dalitso Kawale, the MP for Dowa North East constituency where the Matekenya Health Centre is located, commended Joggers on the Move for the project.

Kavaler said the project will go a long way in helping the people of his constituency.

He said the people of Dowa North East Constituency were very grateful for the support provided by Joggers in Action in raising funds for solar lights for the Matkenya Health Station.

“This will help our health workers as well as patients in the area to better serve and receive services. The Matekenya health post is currently being upgraded to a health centre with the assistance of the Ministry of Health. This assistance will give hope to our people of Matekenya that health services in the area will continue to improve,” he said.
