You can’t miss Jessica Alba in the 21st century as she has played many roles in movies such as Fantastic Four and HoneyBut she’s largely faded from the spotlight over the past five years, devoting more time to other projects, like her beauty brand The Honest Company.
But on June 21, she returns to Hollywood, starring in and executive producing a new Netflix film, a gritty action thriller Trigger warning.

Directed by Indonesian filmmaker Mouly Surya, the film is an ambitious compared to Rambo and John Wickmainly because of its theme of cold-blooded revenge and plenty of hand-to-hand combat. The story follows Special Forces commando Parker (Alba) who is called back to her hometown after her father’s sudden death, which she believes is suspicious. Her investigation quickly goes wrong, involving her in illegal arms dealing, domestic terrorism, and political corruption.
If this sounds familiar, it’s because Netflix often makes relatively middling action movies starring relatively middling (but famous) actors in order to make a quick buck. After all, this is the platform that brought us The Last Days of American Crime (2020) and outsider (2018), two action films that have a Rotten Tomatoes score of less than 25%. Most recently, Jennifer Lopez starred in Atlasa film described by one critic as “Parody” It feels like it was “made twenty years ago.”
It may not be the production of critics’ dreams, but Netflix’s action originals never fail to draw audiences. Red Notice (2021) was panned by critics, but Most Viewed English-language films have been viewed over 230 million times worldwide on Netflix.
Trigger warning Already on Netflix Top 10 in the world The film has some merits, though. The action choreography is sometimes superb, especially when Alba goes on a machete rampage (Suriya adds Indonesian knife fights to set it apart from standard Western action choreography).
The film’s political commentary, while not fully developed, feels timely. It was released during the U.S. presidential campaign, and the flaws of its politicians — especially an ultra-conservative senator — forced audiences to reckon with their own divided political landscape.
Is this the best action movie ever? No. Netflix Original extraction It can be said to have higher energy. Trigger warning It’s certainly a solid choice for a star whose shine has faded.
