Owen Smith was never a front-runner in the Labour leadership race. But moderates in the party hoped that he could at least start to make a dent in the strong 59% support Jeremy Corbyn enjoyed last year. Perhaps that number could be whittled down to closer to 50%. Perhaps, in the three categories of voters – full members, registered supporters and affiliate members (mostly trade unionists) – he could even be beaten.
