LOS ANGELES – Jennifer Lopez has filed for divorce from Ben Affleck, officially giving love a second chance two years after the Hollywood power couple tied the knot, US media reported on Tuesday.
Nicknamed “Bennifer” when they first dated in the early 2000s amid the tabloid celebrity boom, the couple rekindled their romance nearly 20 years later.
But according to Hollywood industry media Variety and celebrity gossip website TMZ, Lopez filed divorce documents with a Los Angeles court on Tuesday.
A representative for Lopez declined to comment.
Affleck’s publicist did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment.
This is the fourth marriage for Lopez, a 55-year-old pop singer and actress, and the second for Affleck, a 52-year-old Oscar-winning movie star and director.
The two first met in 2002 on the set of the critically-critical film The Boys.
They became the center of media attention when they started dating and announced their engagement.
But they postponed their wedding, originally scheduled for 2003, and announced the end of their relationship in early 2004.
In 2021, “Bennifer” once again became an internet sensation when photos of them together again began to circulate.
“It’s a beautiful love story where we got a second chance,” Lopez said in an interview at the time.
Lopez and Affleck announced their engagement in April 2022, and the A-list couple married in Las Vegas in July.
The following month, the couple made the happy news official again in a lavish ceremony at the Good Will Hunting star’s 87-acre (35-hectare) estate in the southeastern U.S. state of Georgia.
Hollywood bigwigs in attendance at the three-day event included Affleck’s old friend Matt Damon and director Kevin Smith.
The couple reportedly purchased a $60 million home together in Los Angeles last year.
But earlier this year, rumors emerged in the entertainment press and on social media that they were having marital problems.
Fans noted that Lopez celebrated her 55th birthday last month without her husband, and TMZ claims they have sold the home they shared and Affleck has moved into a luxury bachelor pad.
People magazine said the relationship became strained over their differing views on celebrity.
“She loves opening up to her fans and the world,” the magazine quoted an unnamed source as saying.
“He’s more introspective and private. It’s difficult for him on a daily basis.”
According to TMZ , the divorce documents list the couple’s separation date as April 26, 2024, and state that the two are no longer speaking.
Lopez was previously married to actor Ogani Noa, dancer Cris Judd and singer Marc Anthony, with whom she has twin sons Max and Amy.
Affleck is married to actress Jennifer Garner, and they are the parents of Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.
