TOKYO: A barrier erected in Japan to block views of Mount Fuji has been removed after it successfully deterred unruly tourists, government officials said on Tuesday (Aug 20).

The Fujikawaguchiko town erected the giant screen in May after residents complained that large numbers of foreign tourists were hindering attempts to take photos of Japan’s famous volcano.

The town lowered the screens on Aug. 15 before the typhoon hit, and decided not to put them back up.

“We want to see what happens,” a town official told AFP.

“There are still some people coming here. But we no longer see many people suddenly rushing out of traffic to cross the road,” he said.
